What I've noticed about the way we experience music nowadays is about consumption. Whether you got the money to buy the damn CD or just download the thing off the internet we are constantly trying to figure "what else has this perosn done? what else are they connected to? am i missing an album? is my experience COMPLETE?" instead of accepting the COMPLETENESS of what we feel to be INCOMPLETENESS. each moment of listning to music, whether it be off a scratched cd you burned off a friend 5 years ago or off yer ipod is COMPLETE. whether it be listening to a vinyl in your grandparent's basement or live at a show: COMPLETION. we can end our search there if we please. to constantly think about "WHAT ELSE? WHO ELSE? IS THERE A COMMUNITY? I WONDER: SHOULD I BUY THIS CD OR JUST STEAL IT? I WONDER:" all natural things to wonder but they impede the full experience of the music. i myself have some guilt about stealing cds from artists i respect BUT!! in order to discover new music i really must search online in the pirated scene. or must i? it seems like in order to experience anything these days we feel we must do reserach online since the INFORMATION is there, we must research. we must make ourselves INFORMED therefore we might enjoy the resulting EXPERIENCE more. if we want to know who the members of the band are, are they still alive, are they still touring, are they clever are they funny? are they good looking? if we are sitting at a computer we can look that up AS WE'RE LISTENING TO THE CD! instant gratification but are we still really listening to the cd or trying to expand our network of understanding? i try to deny these tendencies as much as possible. eventually the corporations might include information about the band in the cd that pops up on your computer whiel the music is playing. they might pop up other products they want you to buy related to the music@! they might pop up OTHER BANDS from their selection that might please you the way the purchase of this cd did! by saturating the user with information, they could lead you on to the next purchase without even listening to the current purchase. which is their ultimate goal: keep the music out of it COMPLETELY. this mentality, due to information technology, (also commercial) leaks into the "indie" world where everyone must have a myspace or you are doomed. also marketing and cool hair. QUICK LOOK AT THEIR TOUR BLOG SO YOU DON'T REALIZE THAT THIS SONG IS A RIP OFF OF A SONG BY THE CLASH AHAHAHA
